MONK was born in Rock Mount, North Carolina.  He had a very unique jazz repertoire.  He was a pianist:  WELL YOU NEEDN'T, BLUE MONK, MY DEAR, RUBY, some of his numerous jazz compositions.  MONK began studying classical piano first at the age of 11.  He said I ACTUALLY TAUGHT MYSELF HOW READ NOTES BEFORE EVER HAVING LESSONS.  I ACCOMPLISHED THUS BY WATCHING OVER MY SISTERS SHOULDER.  In 1941, MONK relocated to Harlem.  He worked at Milton's Playhouse.  He was humorous and throughly enjoyed his piano.  He wrote 12 bar blues and 32 bar ballad. MONK was famous for his unique piano style.  He actually flattened his fingers when he played the piano. To achieve the desired sound he wanted he also used elbows and forearms.  Sometimes during concerts he would get up from the piano bench and break out into rhythmic dance.
